LECTURE: 'A REPOSITORY OF KNOWLEDGE - THE SCHOOLS' MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION, OFFERING A UNIQUE INSIGHT INTO MEDICINAL PRACTICES IN POST INDEPENDENT IRELAND.'
Maplethorpe Lecture Theatre, UCL School of Pharmacy, 29-39 Brunswick Square, London WC1N 1AX
Monday 21 May 2018 17:30
Cost: free

Fiona Shannon is a Ph.D. candidate in Trinity College Dublin, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Her talk will centre on her current research into the medicinal information within the Schools’ Manuscript Collection of over 700,000 pages of regional Irish traditional and folkloric knowledge, collected by school children in the 1930s. The Collection forms part of the National Folklore Collection in University College Dublin which has recently been inscribed into the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.

Fiona's research has involved analysing ethnomedicinal information documented in this collection, offering a unique insight into the medicinal beliefs and practices of the people at that time. In addition, the research group has contacted some of the original participants to the scheme and documented their oral recollections, and have linked them back to their specific schools’ contributions in the archives. This has provided a context and a novel perspective on the collection itself, and the traditional knowledge housed therein.

Attendance free, no need to book, refreshments from 17:00.
